In 2018, local Wynyard residents Derek and Penny Cornwall took a chance on a dream to create a culinary and social experience unlike anything the north-west currently had to offer. The journey began with that big first step, which the couple took when they purchased their town’s nearly century-old, heritage-listed bank. Welcome to the Vault Cafe & Bar.
Located on the corner of Goldie and Hogg Street, The Vault overlooks the Inglis River and the Richard Gutteridge Gardens that beautify the water’s edge.
Unique Style inside and Out
The couple’s vision soon became a reality, taking shape as a 100% local, family owned and operated, custom-built café, bar and restaurant where old meets new to create one-of-a-kind experience for the senses.
As quirky café by day and sophisticated bar & restaurant by night, Our elegant and creative menu showcases the finest locally-sourced Tasmanian produce in a fresh and contemporary culinary style.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner can all be enjoyed seven days a week, especially when accompanied with a delicious Beverage.
A Class Above The Rest
We have a wide selection of TASMANIAN and Australian beers, wines and spirits, which ARE BEAUTIFULLY SHOWCASED IN our signature vault cocktails.
the bar
The patchwork backsplash is built from lead, copper and brass shims recycled from the former Wesley Vale pulp mill.
the dining room
The barstool tables were constructed using salvaged parts recovered from a nearby abandoned timber mill, while the booth-side tables sit atop the real differential housings of a 1928 Chevy.
the book room
The Book Room, as its come to be known, is home to hundreds of books gathered from accross the state, with many rare titles and first editions on display. The bank’s original strongroom door can also be found here, seated within the exposed brick walls of the original structure.

the bathroom
Underfoot lies over one thousand pennies, hand-laid and resined into place. The bespoke vault door was pieced together using spare parts from a variety of different machines—car engines, tractor mowers, wood planners and various pipe fittings that have all been reconstituted to complete its signature look.
the beer garden
a casual space perfect for enjoying long summer evenings with friends. The newly constituted open-air seating area and live music venue is girded by a row of 225 litre repurposed whiskey barrels obtained from Hellyer’s Road Distillery in Burnie.
Here at The Vault, we’re always planning special functions—including live music, wine, whisky, and beer appreciation nights, and ticketed private events.
